Smart Cards
The strip under the Calls panel that flags what the call itself raised, like open questions, numbers that don’t match and loose agreements.
What the strip is
Smart Cards is the strip under the Calls panel. The two do different jobs: the panel above shows what you asked for, and the strip below shows what the call brought up by itself.
It’s there for the whole call, empty at first. Until something is worth saying, it reads “Listening. Nothing worth interrupting you for yet.”

Cards belong to one call. When the panel closes they go, and the saved call keeps its transcript and takeaways instead.
What lands on a card
Each card opens with a short label saying what kind of thing it is:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| You have this | The answer to what’s being asked of you, from earlier in the call |
| Not said out loud | What someone means but hasn’t said |
| Smart move | The specific thing to say or ask right now |
| Still open | A question from earlier that never got an answer |
| Doesn’t add up | A figure or fact that conflicts with an earlier one |
| Watch this | Something about your own side: repeating yourself, drifting, a commitment you just made |
| Not pinned down | Agreed, but with no owner, date or number |
| Term | A name or acronym the call itself defined earlier |
| Right now | Where the call stands, from a full read of it |
A card of one sentence stays as it is; on a card of two or more, each sentence gets a small dot.
A tenth label, Goal, isn’t a Smart Card: it’s Coach reminding you of a goal you set, in the same strip.
Under the text are one or two follow-up chips. They’re written with the card, so they name its subject rather than saying “tell me more”. Tapping one asks that question for you, and the answer appears in the panel above like any other.
Moving between cards
Once there’s more than one card, ‹ and › appear next to the label. There’s no counter: an arrow greys out when there’s nothing further that way.
If you step back to read an older card and a new one arrives, you stay where you are. The new card is added behind you, and the › arrow lighting up is how you know.
Up to 30 cards are kept per call; after that, the oldest drop off.
The two buttons on the right
Refresh does one of three things, and its tooltip says which:
- On an empty strip: Read the whole call. Nothing has come up yet, so this asks for a read of where the call stands now. It shows “Reading the call…” while it works.
- On a card: Update this card, or find something new. It checks that card’s subject against the whole call. If there’s news, the card is replaced where it is, so you don’t have to go looking for the answer: did anyone ever reply, is she still hedging, did it get an owner. If there isn’t, the card stays and something else from the call arrives beside it as a new card.
- Once a call has produced 12 cards this way: Update this card, and updates only.
After a press, the button disappears for about a minute and comes back once it can do something again. After 25 presses, it’s gone for the rest of the call.
Hide folds the strip down to a sliver, and the button becomes Show. Folding also stops the watching; the strip doesn’t keep working behind a control that says it’s hidden. Unfolding starts it again straight away.
Watching also pauses while the call is paused, while the panel is minimized, while one of the questions about closing is up and while the connection is down.
Note: Card text is plain text, never formatted or clickable. It’s built from what other people said on your call, so it’s shown as it is.
Turning it up, down or off
Smart Cards is set per preset, so a standup and a customer call can behave differently. Open Personalize → Calls → Call presets, pick a preset and set Smart cards. (On Basic these pages are greyed out and clicking one opens the Plan sheet; on an account that has never had Calls they don’t appear at all.)
| Setting | What you get |
|---|---|
| Off | No strip at all: only the panel. |
| Key moments | The default. Only things worth interrupting you for: around 10 an hour at the very most, and usually far fewer, because the bar is high. |
| Chatty | A lower bar and a shorter wait between cards, so roughly twice as many. |
The setting changes the bar and the spacing, not how often the call is read, so it costs the same either way; only the number of cards changes.
See Call presets for the rest of what a preset holds.
Common questions
Why haven’t I seen any cards?
Either the call hasn’t raised anything worth showing, or the preset in use has Smart cards set to Off. On a quiet call, press Refresh: on an empty strip, it reads the whole call.
Does hiding the strip save anything?
Yes. Folding it stops the watching until you open it again.
